No, I wouldn’t wear those shorts to work (the ones at the bottom of this article). The blazer is a definite yes, though.
There are a number of reasons why you should start to incorporate business clothing into your casual wardrobe. It’s really all about efficiency, taking style risks, and having fun with your wardrobe.
Resurgence of Business Clothing…. Everywhere
If you’ve gone shopping sometime in the last year, you may have noticed an influx of workwear fashion. It has emerged in the Spring 2018 ready-to-wear lines of high-fashion designers. You’ve seen it creep into the Fashion Nova offering. You’ve seen more blazers worn as dresses than you’ve seen years. And you may have seen some blouses and slacks and a higher profile of clothing worn at Sunday brunch.
Workwear fashion is back.
The great thing about this newfound popularity is that cute clothes for work have suddenly become more readily available. And not just the plain, dry button-downs and pencil skirts, either. You’ve seen unique clothing that you can wear to work when you want to feel like a rockstar.
Take advantage of this trend and snatch up a few items. Your first stop should be an oversized blazer. It’s one of the most easily transferable on-trend items. You can wear it to the office with slacks or a pencil skirt or on the weekend with a crop top and high-waist jeans (my personal favorite).
Expand Your Closet Quicker
I explained in this article a great rule of thumb I use when shopping for important pieces: never buy something unless you can think of at least three ways to wear it.
If you begin using your work wardrobe in your casual outfits, you are near-endlessly expanding the amount of outfits you can squeeze out of your closet. Think about it—not only can you wear that cute blouse to the office, you can also wear it to drinks with your friends. The blazer I wore in the photos at the bottom of this article is one that I can pair with the matching shorts on the weekend or with my favorite beige high-waist slacks for work.
In fact…I might wear the latter to work tomorrow.
Chance to Experiment with New Style
I bought the outfit in this article for a pageant interview. The Miss NC USA Pageant was looming and I wanted something that was a little out of the ordinary. I pushed my own personal style boundaries and went for the shorts suit. Best pageant wardrobe decision ever (although, I’m not a fan of the styling I chose for it last year).
If you don’t already incorporate blazers into your casual wardrobe or puff sleeves into your work wardrobe, this is your chance! Take a risk and try something you normally wouldn’t. I’m incredibly happy that I stepped out of my comfort zone and bought this suit. I recently hosted a Blogger Brunch for The Face Magazine and I wore this exact outfit. I received a number of compliments from attendees of the Brunch and from a few Project Runway designers that were featured during the brunch. It was a unique and memorable outfit to wear and, most importantly, I felt great wearing it.
Step outside of the box! The time is now.
Yours in the stepping,
