It’s Super Bowl Sunday! I’m watching the game tonight. I look cute, too.
This post isn’t about fashion, though. At least, not directly. It’s about the people who aren’t happily sitting back and watching the game. It’s about the women who have to work today and tonight and tomorrow and tomorrow night. It’s also about the women who want to be working but haven’t been able to find gainful employment.
Recently, my hometown–Charlotte, NC–was ranked 50th out of the 50 largest cities in America with regard to economic mobility. We are dead last. There are a number of organizations in the Charlotte area that are working to change this unfortunate problem. Dress for Success Charlotte is one of them.
DFS provides a bevy of career advancement and training programs to more than 800 low-income women each year. It also provides clothing, free of charge, to women who are interviewing for jobs.
Nearly 80% of the women DFS helps are single heads of their respective households with two or more children (read: single moms who need work-appropriate clothes). This organization offers plenty of volunteer opportunities and we hope you will take advantage of some of them!
Here’s one way you can help: DFS is hosting a fundraiser, the Football Finale 2018. It’s this Wednesday, February 7 at the Charlotte City Club. Former NFL players will be analyzing the results of today’s game alongside a silent auction and a beer, wine, and whiskey tasting. It’s one of the largest events for the organization and it helps DFS to raise money to serve some of Charlotte’s most needy. I will be volunteering at the event and I hope to see you there! You can purchase tickets here.
If you would like to find out more about DFS and other fundraisers and ways to give back, visit their website. Enjoy the Super Bowl tonight, but don’t forget about the people who would like to be enjoying it with their friends and family too.
